🤝 Peace Talks: Stuck at a Crossroads
🔵 Ukrainian Demands:
Ok so really their only ‘demand’ is a 30 day unconditional ceasefire.
What they want:
- Full withdrawal of Russian troops
- Restoration of pre-2014 borders
- International security guarantees
- Return of their children
- Return of their prisoners
🔴 Russian Demands:
- Recognition of annexed Ukrainian territories (and there have been claims for further territory that they do not control) Update 17/5: they have demanded full control of four regions that they currently do not fully control and expressed a desire to have more.
- Legally binding neutrality (no NATO for Ukraine)
- Reduction in Ukrainian military
- Lifting of all international sanctions
- No military aid to Ukraine
- NO ceasefire
“Peace negotiations are not possible at this moment.”
— UN Secretary-General António Guterres (2024)
🩸 Documented War Crimes: A Major Roadblock
The International Criminal Court (ICC) and UN Human Rights Council have extensively documented war crimes across multiple regions:
🔻 Key Incidents:
- Bucha Massacre: 458 civilians killed, including 9 children
- Mariupol Siege: 10,284+ civilian deaths, 90% infrastructure destroyed
- Filtration Camps: Mass deportations and ethnic profiling
- Torture, rape, and forced disappearances across occupied regions
- Child abductions: ICC issued arrest warrants against Russian leadership

💰 The Cost of Destruction
Ukraine’s infrastructure damage is staggering:
• 💸 Total damage: $176 billion
• 🏚 Housing: $57.6B
• 🚉 Transport: $36.7B
• ⚡ Energy sector: $32.4B

Reconstruction needs are estimated at $524 billion and could take more than a decade.
🚧 Barriers to Resolution
- Territorial Sovereignty
Russia refuses to discuss withdrawal from annexed regions. Ukraine cannot cede land that’s home to millions of its citizens.
- War Crimes Accountability
Ukraine and its allies insist there can be no impunity for the atrocities committed. Russia denies wrongdoing.
- Security Guarantees
Ukraine seeks legally binding security commitments to prevent future aggression.
- Distrust and Broken Diplomacy
Years of violence and betrayal have eroded trust. Even “Track Two” diplomacy—unofficial back-channel communications—has yielded little progress.
🌍 International Solidarity Is Essential
Ukraine is fighting not just for itself but for the principles of sovereignty, human rights, and rule of law.
