Phoenix rising

Did some great drives from our base at Gruyere, Victoria. There are beautiful hikes everywhere. We stuck to some smaller ones largely because we only had a couple of days in Victoria and also because I was starting to get a bit worried about a worsening plantar fasciitis I had in my left foot and the upcoming hikes we had planned for Tassie! As it turned out a couple of the walks were closed anyway because of recent big storms that had knocked down big trees across the track.  We saw a sign warning that one end of a circuit was closed due to storm damage – we thought perhaps they were just being cautious and figured we could still do the circuit through from the other end being experienced ‘bushies’. However after seeing some of the damage and trees we had to climb over in the ‘open’ track we figured they were serious and we should double back.

Yes this was supposed to be the track..

But even with the serious storm damage and clear evidence of damage from bushfires the forest was still beautiful.  Cora Lynn Falls and the Big Tree were great short little tracks that were worth seeing.

Even a way out evidence of the devastation of the 2009 fires was very clear

Cute little Fragas cafe made it back from the 2009 bushfires and now serves up lovely meals like my birthday lunch here of local smoked trout salad

Dead mountain giants from the Black Saturday 2009 fires with the reborn bush coming up underneath

Sad to see so much evidence of the destruction of these giant mountain ash forests still visible from the2009 Black Saturday fires
