What are you on about, Trump?
So after 25th – 27th May when Russia pummelled civilian cities and villages across Ukraine with record numbers of drones and huge numbers of missiles at a time when they are being asked to negotiate peace – this was what Trump put out on his social media.

Seriously. When I hear things like, “Oh, Putin’s gone crazy! He’s killing people now!” — as if this is some new development — I just sit there, gobsmacked. Like, hello? Where have you been for the past hundred years? Or even the past ten? This isn’t some sudden twist in the plot. This is the plot.
Putin didn’t wake up one morning in 2022 and decide to become the villain. He’s not a loose cannon who just started misfiring. And he certainly didn’t just start suddenly killing people a few days ago!!! He’s a calculated continuation of a system that has always used violence, lies, and brute force to suppress, subjugate, and erase entire peoples. Russia has been doing this — invading, massacring, erasing, exploiting — for more than a century.
Let’s just lay this out plain and simple:
Russia has invaded over 30 countries in the past 150 years.
From the Tsars to Stalin to Putin, the methods have barely changed: invade, terrorise, install puppet regimes, wipe out opposition, and crush any identity that doesn’t serve the empire. Millions have died. Entire nations have lost generations. And for what? For power. For oil. For ideology. For the false glory of empire.
And before someone jumps in with the old, “But other empires did the same thing…”, yes — empires have existed throughout history. The British, French, Germans, Ottomans, Mongols — all guilty. But here’s the difference: most of them that survived, have, at the very least, acknowledged the atrocities. They’ve apologised. They’ve tried, however imperfectly, to reckon with their past. Russia? Not once. Not a single meaningful apology. Not a single real reckoning. Instead, they double down — glorifying Stalin, whitewashing Soviet crimes, and justifying new invasions as “liberation.”
Here’s just a taste of the carnage:
- Ukraine: From the Holodomor famine that killed nearly 4 million in the 1930s to the full-scale invasion in 2022, with tens of thousands of civilians dead and cities like Mariupol flattened. And before that? The Ukrainian Revolution of 1917 was crushed under Bolshevik boots, and the dream of independence suffocated by Moscow’s grip. And before even that — under the Russian Empire — Ukrainian language, culture, and autonomy were systematically erased. Ukrainian peasants were exploited, Cossack lands absorbed, and national identity targeted for elimination.
- Chechnya: Flattened not once but twice — in the 1990s and early 2000s — by Putin’s forces, with entire cities like Grozny turned to rubble and tens of thousands of civilians dead or disappeared.
- Syria: Russian bombs have obliterated hospitals and homes. Thousands of civilians dead. Whole neighbourhoods vanished.
- Georgia: Invaded in 2008. Twenty percent of its territory is still under Russian military occupation.
- Hungary, 1956: Soviet tanks rolled in to crush a democratic uprising. Thousands killed.
- Czechoslovakia, 1968: Reformist hopes destroyed under the treads of Warsaw Pact tanks.
- Poland, the Baltics, Romania, Afghanistan, Moldova, East Germany, Finland — each one a chapter soaked in blood.
- And I haven’t even started on all the other situations Russia gets involved in – arming militias in Africa, stoking war in Sudan, training Hamas to commit atrocities, supporting Iran’s weapons industry… the list goes on…
This isn’t ancient history. This is now. This is ongoing.
And yet, here comes the USA — still winking at Putin, still hedging on sanctions, still making excuses. Acting like Putin is just a misunderstood statesman who got a little too emotional. Just a ‘great guy’ one could do some awesome business deals with.
Enough already.
We don’t need more dithering. We need leadership. We need clear moral lines. We need action.
Sanction Russia like you mean it. Stop buying Russian oil and gas through middlemen. Freeze the assets of their cronies. Arm Ukraine with what it needs to defend its people and push invaders out.
Don’t just talk. Don’t just tweet. Stand for something.
Because Ukraine isn’t just fighting for its survival. It’s fighting against the entire machinery of tyranny that Russia has built over centuries. And if we don’t help stop it now, it won’t stop on its own.
